Natural Hazards: Volcanos |
There are more than 40 active volcanoes in the Sierra region of Ecuador. If you don't think you will be here while one erupts, the odds are against you. Some of the volcanoes are in a state of constant eruption. Stay informed as to any changes in the activity of volcanoes or any other seismic activity.
Those in Quito were affected by the eruption of Volcan Reventador in 2002/03 and Volcan Guagua Pinchincha in October 1999. The city was shut down for a few days and it took a week for the airport to re-open. Should you experience such an event while here, don't forget to wear your gas mask, even if the air looks clean as volcanic ash is very fine and causes bronchial and eye irritation. Some people wore goggles as well. You will have to deal with ash weeks after explosion.
